On 26^th of March 2025, the Migration Department of the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection of Cyprus has announced the re-launch the Digital Nomads Visa scheme, under which non-EU or non-EEA nationals are allowed to submit their application provided that they can perform their work remotely using telecommunications technology, to live temporarily in Cyprus and work for an employer registered abroad or perform work remotely through technology for companies or for their clients that are located abroad.

On 19/12/2023 an amendment to the Civil Registry Law was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus. The new legislation, among other things, allows highly skilled foreign employees in companies which are set by the Council of Ministers’ decision, in the intervals of attraction of companies for business and/or expansion of their activities in Cyprus, to obtain Cypriot citizenship if they resided in Cyprus for 4 or 5 years, depending on their Greek language knowledge. The Ministry of Interior has announced on 22/03/2024 further clarifications regarding this matter.

Brief summary of the Cyprus Tax system for individuals residing from abroad

A physical person’s liability to Cyprus tax is determined by their residence status for taxation purposes. The general rule applying for the tax basis of an individual is that where the individual is considered a tax resident in the Republic, tax is imposed on his/her income accruing or arising from sources all over the world (both within and outside the Republic). On the other hand, where the individual is not a tax resident in the Republic, tax is imposed on his/her income accruing or arising only from sources within the Republic.

Following the Obstruction and Combating Money Laundering Activities Law of 2007-2019 as amended in 2018 voted by the Cyprus Parliament, a legislation which resulted  from the mandatory  4^th European AML Directive (EE 2015/849) for the prevention of the use of the financial system for money laundering activities or for the financing of terrorism, we would like to inform you that the Cyprus Council of Ministers has appointed recently the Cyprus registrar of Companies as the appropriate governmental department to proceed with the establishment of a central registry of beneficial ownership of companies and other legal entities existing in its records in Cyprus. The collection of all the necessary information will begin on 16/03/2021 on a platform which will be established by then by the registrar and is expected to be completed in the following 6 months.

Η τεράστια σημασία της προστασίας των περιουσιακών στοιχείων διανοητικής ιδιοκτησίας για τις επιχειρήσεις έχει αναγνωριστεί προ πολλού από τον επιχειρηματικό κόσμο. Ωστόσο, πολλές είναι οι επιχειρήσεις οι οποίες, παρόλο που επιθυμούν να προχωρήσουν με την καταχώρηση της προστασίας των περιουσιακών στοιχείων πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας τους, διστάζουν να το πράξουν λόγω του κόστους που θα πρέπει να επωμιστούν. In 2016, Cyprus adopted amendments to the Income Tax Laws and to the Cyprus Intellectual Property (IP) regime, to fully comply with the EU legislation and the relevant OECD recommendations of the BEPS Action 5. The amendments apply retrospectively as from 1 July 2016.

Στις 5 Ιουνίου 2020 ψηφίστηκε από τη Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων η νέα νομοθεσία για τα εμπορικά σήματα (Ο Περί Εμπορικών Σημάτων (Τροποιητικός) Νόμος του 2020) η οποία εναρμονίζει την κυπριακή νομοθεσία με την Οδηγία (Ε.Ε) 2015/2436 του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου και του Συμβουλίου της 16ης Δεκεμβρίου 2015 για την προσέγγιση των νομοθεσιών των κρατών μελών περί σημάτων. Μετά την εν λόγω τροποποίηση, έχει επέλθει η ριζική αναθεώρηση του συστήματος εγγραφής και προστασίας των εμπορικών σημάτων και έχουν απλοποιηθεί όλες οι σχετικές διαδικασίες. Επομένως, από  τις 18 Ιουνίου 2020  η διαδικασία καταχώρησης εμπορικού σήματος έχει γίνει ακόμα πιο εύκολη.
